BREAKFAST TOUR OF KENIA ALMARAZ MURILLO’S SHOW AT GALERIA BOULAKIA IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ARTIST AND CURATOR ANNABELLE BOULAKIA
The result of a father-daughter collaboration between Daniel and Annabelle Cohen-Boulakia, the exhibition «Le Temps de l’Eclipse» was born from a shared desire to present in London the work of Bolivian artist Kenia Almaraz Murillo represented by Millenn’Art. From 21 April to 10 May 2022, Galerie Boulakia will present a collection of weavings and sculptures highlighting the young artist’s evolutions in style, technique and inspiration.
Kenia Almaraz Murillo’s first weavings evoke her ancestral South American origins through the integration of natural elements from Bolivia such as wool, bamboo or alpaca fibre. The use of these raw materials is a reflection of her ethnic roots. The artist is constantly inspired by mystical and totemic signs, referring to primitive societies. The colours of her weavings echo the birds of paradise with their bright and warm colours that populate the Amazonian forest. In her Niña del Volcán weaving, for example, Kenia refers to the Peruvian Tunqui bird whose coat and legs recall the yellow and purple weave of the wool. The artist also incorporates the Tullmas, traditional Bolivian pompoms worn during the Oruro carnival, into this work.
