We will start with a breakfast tour of Karel Appel’s exhibition, Paris/New York, at Max Hetzler gallery before heading to Thaddaeus Ropac for an exclusive visit of Rachel Jones: SMIIILLLLEEEE with gallery Director Anais Ferrier. We will then be welcomed by Zoe Sperling, Director of Hauser & Wirth gallery for a private tour of Ed Clark Without a Doubt.

Karel Appel’s (1921-2006) solo exhibition, Paris/New York, explores two tenets of the artist’s practice that emerge out of his early years spent in the two cities: the nude figure and action painting. This exhibition traces Appel’s exploration of the nude from the 1950s to the 2000s.  A founding figure of CoBrA (1948-1951), Karel Appel began his career in the aftermath of the Second World War.

In her new body of work, Rachel Jones investigates a sense of self as a visual, visceral experience, with the motifs of mouths and teeth suggesting vivid inner landscapes. Some of these new works are marked by a shift in her palette, with more muted tones and a reduction in patterning to produce quieter passages, while her flower forms have become more prevalent.

A pioneer of the New York School, Ed Clark pushed the boundaries of abstraction beyond expressionism, with a focus on materiality, form and colour. This exhibition is the artist’s first ever solo presentation in the UK and follows his inclusion in the landmark touring exhibition ‘Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963 – 1983’. The exhibition spans three decades of his career from the 1970s to the 1990s, providing insight into Clark’s breakthroughs in abstract painting and the shift from controlled horizontal brushstrokes to a more loose and assertive style, as displayed in his Broken Rainbow series.
