ENCOUNTER WITH ARTIST CATALINA SWINBURN AND OPENING BRUNCH AT CROMWELL PLACE
Selma Feriani Gallery & Alexandra De Royere are delighted to invite you to the opening brunch of Archaic Contingency, an exhibition by Chilean artist Catalina Swinburn at Cromwell Place opening 5th October 2021.
This exhibition marks the artist’s third solo show with the gallery and will include installations and sculptures. Archaic Contingency is a result of an investigation into literature’s depiction of weaving as a dynamic activity, and how it subsequently served as a platform for gender ideology.
Swinburn’s sensational sculptures are produced by intricately weaving together texts to construct robust monumental structures. Through this labour-intensive approach, the material is transformed from delicate pages of books to sculptural forms that the artist often wears as armour to perform in. The artwork is, therefore, activated by the artist’s position as both the fabricator and performer, occupying a determination as she possesses multiple roles. This can be seen as a metaphor for resistance, where woven narratives are portrayed as a substitute for the silence of women throughout history.
